What does it feel like being a therapist or coach?

What does it feel like being a therapist or coach?

We expect the feeling of ‘wow, I’m making a difference’, ‘I’m so happy to help people improve their lives’, and ‘this is why I’m here’, and they are great feelings. The job satisfaction is astounding. However, unfortunately the more common feelings are ‘I’m worried I’ll have to stop because I’m not earning a living’, ‘I can’t afford my CPD’, ‘I’m going to have to get a job that doesn’t help people so I can pay my mortgage’, ‘My skills are being wasted, why did I spend so much time and money on this when it’s not wanted?’ These are the sad reality, day to day for too many therapists. Thoughts are being merely punctuated by the positives, while the crushing reality of a struggling business dominates. How common is this?…

Does it have to take years to get busy?

Does it have to take years to get busy?

Most therapists I know have been at this for years and are still a long way from full. I know physical therapists with over a decade in practice, who are struggling. I know hypnotherapists of 15 years experience who are nearly empty, I know counsellors and psychotherapists with years in business but few clients and the list goes on. Here's the honest truth – being busy can be accomplished in a few months. So, why are most self employed therapists and coaches struggling? It's simple. How to reach, connect with, and encourage a client to act, is a completely different skill-set from the help we give them. If you were a jeweler, would you expect that fact to also make you an expert jewelry salesperson? If you were a gardener…

Who can you help right now?

Who can you help right now?

I had a question last week about getting help out, and I was asked: what level of Therapist or Coach do you need to be? It brought into sharp focus an issue that happens a lot. When we start out having just trained, we have a lot of learning, but a limited amount of experience. That's where so much doubt and uncertainty can begin. 'Am I good enough to help?' 'Can I offer enough?' 'Should I do more training before I put myself out there?' Sound familiar? Nearly all of us have these thoughts at the start. Especially if we're not busy. The bad feelings of worry about seeing enough clients to make a difference, and can we afford to keep going as a therapist or coach, can funnel into…

Therapists and money: too often it’s like oil and water

Therapists and money: too often it’s like oil and water

Uncategorized
We really seem to be conditioned to be uncomfortable around the money side of what we do. I certainly was when I began. Some of it is obvious – we love helping people and that's more important than money. Sure, I get that. We're carers, helpers, and givers. But for some reason we seem to be out of balance on that particular issue. We give, give, give, and so often end up struggling at the end of it. It's really odd, as most coaches and therapists are very clear when giving help to clients, that those clients need to balance their time/energy or they will burn-out and not be able to take care of the people who matter in life. So why are we so poor at allowing ourselves a…

“How many people will this let me help?”

“How many people will this let me help?”

Uncategorized
Perhaps the most important question for a therapist or coach, but one we rarely ask ourselves. If we let this question help us, we can end up making a huge difference in peoples lives. By and large we seems to be a species that wants the feeling of doing something useful. We need to feel this even if it is temporary, rather than a more solid action that builds success for real. It would certainly sum up a lot of my early efforts to get busy :) Most therapists I talk to have a litany of things they have tried that were more blind hope than part of a plan. 'I put up a website', 'I put up a sign', 'I worked on a brochure, but didn't get it printed…

5 Wrong Conclusions we draw from not being busy!

Uncategorized
When we're not busy professionally, we have time on our hands and that usually leads to thoughts going round and round in our heads about what could be wrong, why aren't we busy? It's an easy enough time to be anxious. I remember those days when I was starting out, worrying if people wanted what I was offering? could I pay the rent? would I have to get another job just for money? should I give up? My head was more active than ever. I spent a great amount of time just thinking about work in those early days. Typically when we're unsure about how we will succeed, it occupies our mind to a huge degree. We are so stressed about surviving and remaining in practice helping people, that we…

The 5 Things I would do if starting now. #4 is huge!

Uncategorized
A lot of people have asked me to show them what I did that got my practice booked out within a couple of years. The truth is, I'd never want any therapist or coach to go through what I had to do to build that, because most of what I did was the wrong stuff – I just learned from it and adjusted as I went. It was a steep learning curve full of stress and costing a lot of money. Looking back, if I could have done only the stuff that I found worked best, it would be completely different, and would have been a much easier journey. So, here are the top 5 things I'd do if I was opening a therapy or coaching business today: 1. I'd…

Take Action!

Uncategorized
Is it talk or is it action that will let you help more people and earn a better living? What action are you taking to help more people? Take a real hard look at that. Ask yourself 'Does this let me help anyone extra this week?' If not can you also, or instead of that, do something for those you can already help, and do it this week? Being this practical will let us become better therapists, help more people, grow our experience and therefore our expertise, and thus allow us to help more and more people in ever better ways as we go. But even at the start we can make a great difference to someone suffering and until we start we can't gain experience. That's why we have…

Make a Difference

Uncategorized
Making a difference to others should also make a difference to you. Not just earning a living & not having to worry much about bills, but with a great feeling of making a difference in people's lives. There is no feeling on earth like knowing you've helped people achieve what they want. I know I'd hugely regret it if I'd spent so much time training and wasn't making use of those skills. The job satisfaction is amazing when we see people living life in a way they were previously unable to live. When we get a testimonial doesn't it really lift us? I know I've made a big difference in the lives of many people. From therapists who are now busy and enjoying life, to former clients who are traveling…
