Am I good enough?

Uncategorized
Starting to help people on a larger scale usually means having to set up some sort of a business to support those efforts. Most commonly it's very a very simple to do soletrader. But often people pause at the name. Should I use my own name or develop a business name? Here's a short video with some advice on what the evidence shows to be best. As always it needs to be about helping more people and then earning a better income. Those who go for that win for the person in need and then a win for themselves tend to be the ones who keep going and end up helping many many more people as a result. The bad news is that if we hold back from putting ourselves…

Don’t give up!

Uncategorized
When I started as a therapist I knew I could help and that there were people out there who needed my help. I didn't realise my biggest challenge would be getting the message of what I help with and who it's for to those in need. When my clinic was empty I wondered if I was any good. I second guessed my methods (even though they were what had been used to get me over decades of anxiety and depression), and I worried would I have to go back into a day job I didn't want rather than get to help people full time. I had rent to pay, and a family to support and this is what I wanted to do in life. It matters to me. It was…

Seasonal gloom!

Uncategorized
It's November. A frustrating time for therapists and coaches because people start dropping out and the number of no-shows increases as people get obsessed with Christmas. It's bizarre how much turmoil one day makes. For weeks in advance people panic and begin to stop taking care of themselves. That leaves the Therapist with more empty slots but still paying the rent, and trying to keep their roof over their heads. Unless we know how to stay busy year-round, this is the situation so many of us face. However, it doesn't have to be this way. For my first couple of years as a therapist and coach, I saw more gaps in my diary in November and December, which really was the worst time for it. Christmas was just around the…

Should I be on Linkedin?

Uncategorized
"Every professional should be on Linkedin" is the refrain so many people told me at the start. So I tried it. I researched how to use it, I even got professional advice on how to use it. My own advice now is: Ignore it unless you are seeking contracts from businesses.  While it can yield results, they are smaller than most other major Social Media options for reaching consumer clients. For B to B it's great. When it comes to reaching the person in the street, it's very weak. That's because Linkedin is social media with a defined sphere of purpose: connecting business people.  As always the question of 'What should I be doing on Social Media?' can only be answered by the question 'What is your Goal?', so here…

Website improvements

Uncategorized
Why does your website look the way it does? Was it designed from the point of view of the person needing your service? If so, well done. If not, read on...  When you’re buying a car, do you decide what you need it to do (size, seats vs space, fuel economy, etc.) and then go out and get the one that does what you need, or do you go to a garage and ask them to get you a car? Oddly most people approach their website with less planning than buying a car. It's especially bizarre when you consider your source of income is going to determine every car you buy in the future.  There seem to be three ways we go about creating our websites: 1. The logic goes:…

Facebook Update

Uncategorized
*Important Facebook Update* Facebook is rolling out a new format for business/fan pages this summer. The banner size is the same but the text of your page name and description will now appear on top of it.  If you're using this virtual real estate by putting text on it check if it will still show in the new format. (if you're not, the image should 'tell a story' or convey a message of benefit to your brand and clients).  My private clinical work page has been updated so you can see the new format here: www.facebook.com/JohnPrendergastTherapy When the change comes to your page you will get a preview and a number of days to update, so I recommend having your template ready for the new look. Make it an easy…

Go for Engagement!

Uncategorized
A few weeks ago I wrote about going for engagement over page likes. Over the past 14 days I've posted the usual number of posts, on the usual topics on my personal therapy business page, but I've gone for a strategy that gets engagement but less likes than usual. I was concerned at how few likes at first but then I saw the change. The growth in new clients is 60% Those 60% are more people who are taking action this week to make a positive change in their lives. As long as we do good work this is a win for everyone.  I'll keep trailing this on and off over the coming months to be sure the positive results stay solid. But I just wanted to reinforce the point that…
